The famous Sycamore Gap tree stood in a natural dip in Hadrian's Wall near Housesteads and was one of the most photographed spots in Northumberland. The tree was felled in September 2023, but the dramatic crags and the highest surviving remains of Hadrian's Wall are still well worth the walk from Housesteads Crag.
Hadrian’s wall is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of England’s greatest landmarks. The wall is not an isolated ruin. The wall and surrounding area also includes milecastles, temples and Roman forts such as Housesteads, Vindolanda and Epiacum.
